COURSE DESCRIPTION: Business course designed to provide students with general knowledge of the computerized business office, a more competent basis for choosing a business career and a meaningful vocabulary of business office terms and concepts.

PURPOSE: To introduce the student to the basic computer concepts, terminology, hardware and software. Hands on experience using word processing, spreadsheet, database, presentation and operating systems software provides the student with a practical exposure to the uses of microcomputers. To introduce the student to content for employment in one of the largest major occupational groups, administrative support. Demand in this career area will continue to expand as businesses utilize advanced office technology to increase their production efficiency and improve the quality of their products and services.

PARTICIPATION: Students will be called upon to discuss current assignments and are expected to have read assignment material in advance. Students are expected to participate in small group discussion, role plays and exercises both in and out of the classroom.

ACADEMIC DISHONESTY POLICY: Academic dishonesty by students damages institutional credibility and unfairly jeopardizes honest students; therefore, it will not be tolerated in any form. Students found participating in academic dishonesty will be referred for disciplinary action.

ATTENDANCE: Regular attendance is expected. Due to the nature of the course, frequent absences will place the student at a severe academic disadvantage. Students will need to make up missed software applications assignments on the computer at school, unless other arrangements are made with the teacher. The computer lab will normally be open for student use in the mornings after 7:30 am. No make-up exams, quizzes or presentations will be given for unexcused absences. Students will be responsible for obtaining homework etc for absences from the classroom teacher or fellow students.

GRADING: Each student will earn their grade based on the following:

Homework/Class Participation 25% of the total grade

Written Tests/Quizzes 25% of the total grade

Performance Task Events 50% of the total grade

GENERAL: All assignments are due at the beginning of the class period. Late assignments will result in a reduced grade. One day late is 50% of the grade earned. No late work accepted after one day.

3. Pen for grading

5. Three-ring binder for business portfolio

6. Thirty top loading clear sheet protectors for business portfolio
